Project number 3
The early twentieth century was a time when not many people owned a car and the members of the general public relied on public transport to travel from Sudbury to nearby towns. This was not something that most people could afford to do weekly, nor did they have the time free to travel far.
In Sudbury Ephemera Archive there are timetables for using bus, train or local carriers to travel outside Sudbury.
Using the pages from the 1922 Railway and Motor Bus timetables copied below there are three projects suggested, but you only need to choose one project.
- Plan a holiday leaving Sudbury on a Saturday and travelling to a holiday resort on the Norfolk/ Suffolk coast. Times and route will need to be outlined. Also your return journey.
- You have a parcel to take from Sudbury to a village in North Essex. Find a carrier and explain how you can get the parcel to the village.
- If you were travelling to London how would you get there from Sudbury. Outline all the stations you would pass through and the times you arrive and depart from each station. Compare this with travelling to London today by car and train.
You can research the type of trains, buses and carriers and produce creative writing about these journeys.
Draw a sketch map of the local area and show which places are connected by a particular service
